Edinburgh set for polar blast with snow and sleet expected to batter the capital

Edinburgh is set to be battered by low temperatures with a real possibility of snow and sleet impacting the capital at the end of this week.

According to the BBC forecast, the city will experience a very wet and windy week from Wednesday January 11 to Saturday 14 as a Scandinavian ‘beast storm’ hits the British Isles.

But on Sunday, January 15, temperatures are set to plummet from around seven degrees down to a chilly two or three degrees.

However during Sunday night temperatures will become chilly and will reach minus one degrees well into Monday morning.

Monday will then see highs of three degrees celsius but will again see ice and frost set in as residents can expect the temperature to dip into the minus once more.

According to the BBC Weather forecast, next Tuesday 17 will start the day off at minus one but as the temperature builds to just above freezing they predict that Edinburgh could be hit by snow and sleet showers.

This could last from 9am until midnight with snow showers expected to last throughout the day before turning to sleet at around 9pm.

These showers should begin to disappear in the early hours of Wednesday morning but low temperatures will mean that roads and pavements could become hazardous due to ice forming on the surface.

The Met Office said: “Much of this period is likely to be unsettled, with showers or longer spells of rain sweeping across the country, these most likely across the north and west.

“On Sunday, as temperatures become increasingly cooler, these showers are likely to become wintry across the north.

“A temporary spell of milder conditions is possible across the south midweek, however by the end of the week, most areas should see a return to below average temperatures.

“These cooler conditions are likely to allow the wintry showers to return, bringing an increasing likelihood of snow across northern regions down to lower levels.

“Fresh and breezy winds are often likely, becoming stronger at times with a risk of gales.”
