Schools across Edinburgh will be closed on Monday May 8 as the entire UK is set to enjoy an extra bank holiday weekend for the King’s Coronation.
King Charles III is set to be crowned on Saturday May 6 and it is expected that there will be celebrations across Scotland and the rest of the home nations.
Both the Scottish Government and Edinburgh City Council supported the proposals from the Westminster Government to assign the extra bank holiday so that they are able to make the most of the festivities.

A letter has been sent to parents and carers in the capital detailing the decision and giving notice in advance of the historic occasion.
The letter, which was written by Lorna French, the director for education and the chief education officer, read: “Dear Parents and Carers,
“School closures Monday May 8 2023 - King’s coronation bank holiday weekend. I am writing to confirm that all schools will be closed on Monday May 8 as part of the celebrations for the King’s coronation.
“The ceremony for His Majesty King Charles’s III will take place on Saturday May 6 and the UK government has declared a national bank holiday on Monday May 8.
“The Scottish government announced its support for this additional holiday which will form part of a three-day ‘coronation weekend’ of celebration. The bank holiday date was also approved by the City of Edinburgh Council on Thursday February 9.”
