Ask a Scot what their favourite meal is and there's still a good chance a fair few of us will say the classic fish and chips.
In Edinburgh, we've got plenty of options when it comes to chippies - last week a few of them were celebrated as part of National Fish and Chip Day.

If you are to go by TripAdvisor reviews for an indication of top fish and chip restaurant in Edinburgh, you'd be pointed in the direction of an Old Town food spot so popular people have even had their wedding dinner there.

Serving 'proper' fish and chips on Victoria Street, Bertie's - described as 'the plaice to be' - was shortlisted as a best newcomer at the 2020 National Fish & Chip Awards, less than a year after opening.
Locals have lavished Berties with praise - and a series of rave reviews on the popular travel website - with some even saying they serve 'the best fish and chips in the UK'.
One recent review says: "This has to be one of the best fish and chips we’ve had in a very long time. Beautiful setting, fabulous service and worth every penny.
"We will definitely return."
Another customer said: "The service is wonderful, but it’s the quality of the food that really makes this place.
"Big portions and excellent quality! Some of the best fish and chips I’ve ever had."
A further comment reads: "Just been yet again and it's confirmed my opinion that it's probably the best value fish and chips you'll get in a bar or restaurant in Edinburgh.
"The price is very reasonable and you get a good dose of chips on the plate, rather than about ten stuck in a little tub. Normally I need to order extra chips, but not here."
Bertie's also boasts a private dining area 'ideal to celebrate parties and share special moments with friends and family'.
And one couple rate the seafood spot so much that they decided to hold their wedding dinner there.
Praising the staff and the experience, the recent review read: "We decided to get married abroad but had our legal ceremony in Edinburgh followed by a meal at Bertie’s.
"We had our engagement dinner in the private dinning room so it only felt fitting to have the wedding dinner here.
"I cannot fault the staff, Luca the guest services manager who helped us organise everything and both Ben and Rob our wonderful servers who coped well with some very merry bridesmaids!
"Everything was seamless and they even organised a cake for us instead of pudding for the set menu which was a lovely touch.
"Thank you and cannot recommend enough."
The excellent service and reasonable prices aside, it's clear that the main star of the show - the food - is the reason people keep coming back.
One review echoed many others, by simply saying: 'if you love fish and chips, this is the place to go'.
The happy customer added: "great fish and chips. Cooked perfectly. Plenty of fish - not just batter. Chips excellent.
"Comparable to next anywhere in UK."
It seems its a must for all fans of a classic chippy.
