Edinburgh's 'loneliest dog' searching for a home after 600 days in local shelter

An Edinburgh dog has faced the longest wait in the city for a forever home, with a local shelter desperate to unite him with an owner.

Romeo has now been staying at the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home for 600 days, making him the longest waiting dog in the charity.

A three-year-old male Staffie, Romeo has found difficulty being placed with a new family due to his struggles with anxiety and busy or noisy areas.

An "friendly and affectionate" character, Romeo has captured the hearts of all the staff at the EDCH, who are appealing to find the right match.

Now having watched many other animals come and go from the shelter, Romeo would ideally be looking for an owner that could commit a lot of time to his care.

Speaking about Romeo, the EDCH said: "Romeo is looking for an experienced owner who has had an anxious dog in the past and can commit to helping him reach his full potential.

"He would suit an adult only home where he will have company for most of the day. He would like to have his own private and secure garden, and needs a main door home so he doesn’t have to pass neighbours to get inside.

Romeo is a three year old Staffie (EDCH)

"He needs to be the only pet in his new home and needs to live away from the city or other busy area, where there are quiet areas he can go for exercise."

Currently being fostered by a staff member from the EDCH to avoid him getting stressed at the kennels, the team are appealing for potential matches to come forward.

They added: Romeo is a very nervous boy who can find life a bit overwhelming at times. He would love to find an understanding and patient owner who can help him manage his insecurities.

"He will need several visits to get to know his new owner, and is likely to take time to settle in and be comfortable in his new home.

"He travels well in the car and is well behaved when at home. He is very friendly with the people that he knows and can be very affectionate when he wants to be.

"He is an energetic boy who loves running around and playing with his toys, and he enjoys going for quiet walks. Romeo would benefit from working with a behaviourist and needs an owner who is financially able to commit to this"
