Edinburgh's first Dutch inspired cafe and bakery to open in Morningside

Flavours from the Netherlands will debut in Edinburgh's Morningside tomorrow as the "the UK’s only Dutch inspired café bakery" opens its doors to the public.

After months of hard work and preparation, Cafe Gezellig will offer "lekker" or sweet treats such as famous Dutch appeltaart and cinnamon buns alongside other offerings inspired by the Netherlands.

Cafe Gezellig is joining Edinburgh's buzzing international foodie community after a cross country move from Oxfordshire.

"From humble beginnings at farmers markets throughout Oxford in 2019, to having a mobile cafe at Harcourt Arboretum in 2021, I’ve now made the leap to open a proper brick & mortar cafe here in bonnie Edinburgh," said Cafe Gezellig founder Siobhan.

"Being half-Dutch, I loved our family trips to Holland throughout the year, and I'm not going to lie, I mostly enjoyed it for the food, so I love that I'm able to share my passion for Dutch food with you."

Gezellig is an untranslatable Dutch word which encompasses a feeling of coziness & conviviality, such as being surrounded by loved ones when there’s good food and drink to be had.

"This is exactly what we aim to be at Cafe Gezellig; whether you’re on your own reading a good book and sipping on a Warme Chocomel, catching up with an old friend over a pot of tea and a slice of Vlaai, or winding down with colleagues, beer & borrelhapjes, we want to make sure that your time here is truly Gezellig," Siobhan said.

Cafe Gezellig is set to open at 9.30am on Wednesday at 125 Comiston Road.
