Edinburgh's controversial 'Golden Turd Hotel' gets opening date

AN Edinburgh hotel criticised by locals as resembling a “Golden Turd” has finally been given an opening date.

The Marriot’s W hotel at the £1 billion St James Quarter development has been a controversial addition to the New Town.

The discussion stems from the 12-storey building’s golden brown swirled roof, which stands out among the traditional architecture around it.

After it’s completion in 2021 the director of Edinburgh World Heritage, Christina Sinclair, called on councillors and heritage organisations to “remain vigilant” over developments – warning that the new hotel had “raised eyebrows” and “altered our skyline significantly”.

A petition was also launched to “Pit Googly Eyes Oan The Jobby”, garnering support from thousands of Edinburgh residents. A Twitter account named the “Golden Turd Hotel” was also launched.

Marriot announced on Tuesday that the W would be opening officially in November, with a range of “breath-taking dining and specialty bars” inside.

It hailed a new rooftop space and “incredible” 360-degree views from throughout the premises.

“W Edinburgh does more than put you at the centre of Scotland’s historic and culturally rich capital city,” said Marriot. “It immerses you in the spirit of the festival capital of the world. Unique rooms and suites that are anything but expected.”
