Edinburgh's coast set for for new £70 million development with over 400 homes

Construction is set to begin on over 400 new homes at Granton Waterfront in Edinburgh.

The City of Edinburgh Council are set to appoint the contractor CCG Scotland to begin work in May on the £71 million project.

The latest part of the Granton Waterfront development will see 444 new dwellings created, with 195 for social rent and another 193 mid-market options.

A further 56 homes for sale will be delivered through a Development Agreement with CCG.

The council’s Finance and Resource Committee are due to meet tomorrow (March 3) and they are asked to approve CGI Scotland as the single contractor.

The site will provide mixed tenure, net zero carbon homes with all heat and hot water coming from a communal system using renewable sources generated locally on the site.

Granton Waterfront is the name given to the land between West Granton Road and the Firth of Forth, east of Marine Drive and up to and including the harbour.

It was an area of gas works, petrol storage and industrial and storage uses, which by the late 1990s was falling into disuse and dereliction. At that point the Council began to acquire land within the area and began the process of comprehensive, planned redevelopment.

The £1.3 billion project is expected to last 15 years, delivering 3500 homes and other amenities, including a primary school, coastal park and health centre.

On the development framework, Edinburgh Council’s Adam Mcvey said it is time for Granton to ‘celebrate’ its coastline.

He said “Granton has a long and productive heritage, from the towering gas holder that stands firmly on our city’s skyline to Madelvic car factory that sparked innovation as far back as 1898.

“Those days are long gone but Granton’s prominence on Edinburgh’s coastline is undiminished and now provides an unmissable opportunity to learn from cities across Europe that celebrate their coastline.

"Granton Waterfront sets out the ambition for a new waterfront quarter that champions low carbon transport, active travel and sustainable development; a quarter that supports the rich natural environment of Edinburgh’s coastline and, crucially, a place that stands the test of time.

“It will herald a new approach to urban development and regeneration, providing a blueprint for the future. Cultural hubs, innovation start up space, new jobs for local people and high quality homes are brought together to create a diverse and exciting place rooted in community, fairness and sustainability.

“The people of North Edinburgh have long known the amazing asset that is their coastline; something this framework acknowledges and take its inspiration from, setting the principles for Edinburgh to redefine itself as a waterfront city.

"This renewed approach to the coastline provides an opportunity for growth within Scotland’s vibrant capital city.”
