Edinburgh's best bars to visit for ultimate whisky dram according to TripAdvisor

Whisky is undoubtedly one of the first things anyone would think of when talking about Scotland - and to back up its leading whisky-capital status, Edinburgh has many exceptional bars offering the best whisky tasting experience. Here's a list of the four most highly-recommended places to visit for a wee dram in the capital, according to TripAdvisor.

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society

Known as The Vaults, a former wine warehouse is a "spiritual home" of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Come to enjoy an ultimate testing experience in a historical building that dates back to the 12th century.

All like one, TripAdvisor users outline the remarkable atmosphere of the place, delicious food and above all, of course, some of the best whiskies they've ever tasted. Helen, a well-travelled TripAdvisor user, said: "Sommelier did a brilliant job of guiding us through our selection. The net result was that I had some of the best whiskies I can remember tasting.

"The food was an excellent accompaniment to the sampling - very much enjoyed the Haggis, Neeps and Tatties. All served in a warm and comfortable environment reminiscent of a bygone era."

Where: 87 Giles Street, Leith.

Amber Restaurant At The Scotch Whisky Experience

Acknowledged with the TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice 2021 award, the place bursts with an astonishing number of 555 five-star reviews, praising the venue as an excellent place to get to know Scottish cuisine. With its dedicated Taste of Scotland menu, Amber Restaurant offers an ultimate pairing for its fine selection of local whiskies.

Aside from glorifying the restaurant's high-class dishes and drinks, TripAdvisor users are amazed by the reasonable pricing of the place - given that it's located on Edinburgh's main street, Royal Mile, which attracts visitors from all over the world.

Stuart, the popular tourist platform user, said: "You might think this is just a tourist trap aimed at people visiting Edinburgh Castle. Couldn't be more wrong - it's an excellent restaurant focused on quality Scottish cuisine and an amazing selection of Scotch whiskies at decent prices."

Where: 354 Castlehill, The Royal Mile.

Usquabae

Situated in the heart of Edinburgh's West End, Usquabae serves the finest drinks and award-winning whiskies. Only open for two days a week - Fridays and Saturdays - the place is in high demand and is the desired venue for every gourmet drinker.

Diana left a review on TripAdvisor and said: "Had a traditional Scottish whiskey tasting with Angus here, and the whole family loved it! Very educational, he took the time to explain the types and flavours of whiskey from different areas of the country - I now know I like Speyside whiskies - and knew interesting, personal details about each of the distilleries. The tasting room itself was great, and each group got their own cool whiskey cave. Loved it!"

Where: 2 Hope Street, New Town.

One Square

If you are looking for a more contemporary whisky tasting experience, head to One Square. Specialising in whisky as well as gin, the venue is known for its exceptional attention to detail. One Square serves Scottish dishes and uses locally-sourced ingredients, with their menu changing every season.

Taking to TripAdvisor to share their experiences, visitors praise the staff for excellent knowledge of the spirits they serve. One user said: "In an era where bar service can sometimes feel indifferent, it's a pleasure to be served by someone who cares about the quality of our experience. Peter was that person at One Square, turning what could have been an ordinary evening into something more memorable and fun.

"A balmy evening in the outdoor seating area added to the ambience. An impressive gin and whisky menu is a bonus."

Where: 1 Festival Square.
