Edinburgh restaurant apologises for move by waitress during birthday treat

A restaurant in Edinburgh has apologised to a diner after the waitress 'walked away' from the table while serving them.

The experience took place at Gusto on George Street during a special birthday dinner in February but the night took a turn for a worse when the customers claimed they were given the 'rudest waitress ever' who dished out 'dirty looks' and a 'rude attitude.'

While celebrating her 18th birthday the customer said they spent three hours in the diner and received overall poor service and food.

Slamming the restaurant on Tripadvisor, the birthday girl wrote: "I went to my birthday celebration dinner and was served by the rudest waitress ever.

"She completely abandoned our table to the point her colleagues were taking our drinks orders and clearing all the dirty glasses off of our table since she wasn’t bothering to do it herself.

"The looks given to our table by her were awful too!! I had just turned 18, so I don’t know if she thought, 'oh, they’re young; I can’t be bothered' however, she didn’t ID us, so she must’ve thought we were at least a little bit older.

"The issue is every single one of us at that table work at restaurants of the same and upper class and was incredibly appalled by her service."

It wasn’t just the service that they had an issue with, reportedly the food wasn’t up to scratch either.

She explained: "The food wasn’t that great, the only good thing was the caesar salad, I asked my friends how their food was, and they said it was pretty rubbish too.

"The cocktails, caesar salad and the venue are the only things I’d go back for (if I were forced to), in all honesty.

"Safe to say, after being there for three hours or so, our legs were sore, and the experience put a damper on the whole night.

"I truly believe that we would’ve had a better time at Tony Macaroni. However, for those looking for good Italian food, Amarone is at St Andrew Square. I recommend there instead."

Finally, she added: "12.5 per cent service charge? For what? Slow service, dirty looks, rude attitude, numb legs? No thanks. Of course, we removed this, and she asked my boyfriend if everything was okay.

"My boyfriend is the people pleaser he is, said yeah was great! However, my friend said no, not really. She then proceeded to WALK AWAY!

"I didn’t even get a candle in my dessert for my birthday. I spoke to a neighbour about it, and she mentioned she had received the same service, and the food wasn’t great either, (she had gone a couple of weeks before we went)."

In response, the manager wrote: "I'm sorry to hear about your experience when you joined us for your birthday celebrations. Please could you email me so I can investigate further?"

Gusto is a four-star fine-dining Italian restaurant in the West End of Edinburgh that has many good reviews.

One customer said: "I was nervous about dining out because of my allergies, but the Gusto staff took excellent care of me. I called ahead of time to check about safe options, and the host was very helpful.

"When I arrived, my waitress, Aiswarya, made sure the kitchen knew about my allergies. The food was quick to come out, and it was very good. I would definitely come back."

Another said: "We had a very nice meal in a very buzzy, noisy Saturday night atmosphere. The service was a bit mixed though. The starter came very quickly.

"There was then a big gap before the mains arrived. The desserts were then delivered without any cutlery. Overall, we would go again but perhaps choose a less busy night."

While one added: "Lovely lunch yesterday in Gusto George street. The staff were very attentive to my lactose intolerance request. Katarzyna was particularly professional and charming. January rewards offer is worth looking at Thank you for a lovely lunch experience."
