Edinburgh rescuers race to beach after concerned local spots 'group of people' in sea

Edinburgh's lifeboat team were called out twice during the warm weather on Saturday, with calls coming in from two popular beaches.

Shortly before 6pm Queensferry RNLI were called to Portobello Beach as a concerned local called 999 after seeing multiple people in the water who may have got themselves into difficulty.

A search was conducted but no casualties were found. A similar situation took place around 10.30pm after a call came in from Newhaven. The team raced to the scene and by the time they arrived, the casualty found their way to safety.

The team say they have received 43 calls so far this year and urged those out enjoying the warm weather near open water to stay safe and always dial 999 and ask for the coastguard if trouble arises.

Taking to Facebook, the team posted: "Queensferry RNLI called out twice yesterday for incidents of persons in the water.

"5.41pm Queensferry and Kinghorn RNLI Lifeboat were tasked to a report of multiple people in the water off Portobello beach who may be in need of help. A search on the water and beach area was swiftly conducted, and no persons were found to be in difficulty. The caller did the right thing in dialling 999.

"10.30pm Queensferry lifeboat was tasked to a person in the water near Newhaven. When the lifeboat arrived the casualty had managed to get themselves to safety.

"Queensferry Lifeboat have now attended 43 shouts this year. If you need help on the water, or near the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Stay safe."
