Two Edinburgh women arrested after protesters target Holyrood building with red paint

Two women have been arrested and charged after climate protesters have thrown red paint across the Scottish Parliament building ahead of First Minister's Questions.

The campaign group This is Rigged has been attempting to disrupt FMQs since January but recently security increases within the building led to activists shouting and sitting in the lobby.

However, on Thursday, April 27, the climate activists targeted the building in protest as they publicly stated they will "escalate" their efforts are demanding officials "shut down the oil industry in Scotland".

Two women, aged 26 and 23, have been arrested in connection with vandalism and a breach of the peach after the protest this afternoon.

In a video posted on TikTok from This is Rigged, sees two young women sitting where the red paint had been thrown at the wall, before being pulled away by police officers. One protestor said they were there in protest of the Rosebank North Sea oil project, which is decided by the UK Government.

The leader of the group said in a previous interview: "New restrictive measures will not stop the disruption.

"We are a movement of the people, for the people, and we are growing fast. Disruption will continue and, this summer, we will escalate – we will shut down the oil industry in Scotland."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Two women, aged 26 and 23, have been arrested and charged in connection with vandalism and a breach of the peace after paint was thrown at the Scottish Parliament building during a protest on Horse Wynd, Edinburgh, this afternoon.

“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and they are due to appear in court at a later date.

“The other protesters have now dispersed and officers have left the scene.”
