Edinburgh property: Portobello townhouses converted from old church hit the market

Some huge homes in Edinburgh’s desirable Portobello area have come up for sale.

Built inside an repurposed church, they look fantastic but will set back potential buyers a truly eye-watering sum.

These four bedroom Edinburgh town houses stretch across four levels of the former St James Church in Portobello. With 2,866 square feet they are certainly not lacking in space for people to live in.

Featuring four bedrooms, a study, four bathrooms and three ‘public rooms’, each of these homes is currently in the design process but- when finished- will be truly luxury homes.

However, for prospective buyers, these homes come with a weighty price tag of £950,000.

The conversion will create five of these four bedroom homes and property agents are currently letting people look at a mock-up of the homes with a CGI virtual tour of one of the townhouses.

The outside of the property remains the almost unaltered church building. With classic gothic arches and sloped ceiling. The building will be sectioned off for each house and entered through different parts of the building.

Inside, the homes are planned to have great flow to them and incorporate as much of the original design as possible.

One main hall flows through most of the property, with stairs to access higher floors. The living room entrance is through a set of bay doors, with plenty of space for furniture, a dining area and plenty of storage.

The open plan kitchen is also connected to the living room. With all the expected modern amenities.

From the original church, plenty of windows offer excellent natural light into the house, keeping it bright.

Upstairs, the spacious bedrooms will attach onto en-suite bathrooms with walk in showers.

Each property will have their own, small private garden. With a patio, lawn and space for a personal fire pit.

Posting on property website Zoopla, the letting agency said:

“This exquisite family home stretches to 2,866 sq ft and offers some of the most wonderful window architecture you could wish to see. Townhouse 1 has 4 bedrooms ( and study area), 4 bathrooms, 3 public rooms, double height living space and an abundance of original features. This really is one of the most impressive and luxurious conversion properties in Edinburgh.

“The second floor has a wonderful mezzanine gallery area overlooking the drawing room and benefitting from the wonderful original church windows. A spacious double bedroom with storage completes this level. On the third floor there are two en suite bedrooms with velux style windows, offering complete privacy.

“Located on the quiet and leafy Rosefield Place, Portobello, this attractive, select conversion development offers only 5, four and five bedroom luxury, family homes.”
