Edinburgh property: Inside the island schoolhouse under half the price of a city flat

A former school on the Isle of Harris has gone up for sale for less than half the price of a typical Edinburgh flat.

The Former Scalpay School is on the market for "offers in the region of £45,000". It consists of four separate buildings, the largest of which is divided into six rooms.

Scalpay is a popular destination for fishing, diving, walking, and relaxing, and includes a bistro and tea room.

The Instagram account Cheap Scottish Houses, which shared the property, wrote: "This old schoolhouse on the Isle of Harris is made up of four separate buildings with the largest one split into six rooms with double glazed windows, heating & toilets.

"Although it looks a bit the worse for wear on the outside, this place is enormous & surprisingly well maintained on the inside!

"You will of course need local authority consent to convert it into a residential dwelling, but boy what a dwelling you’d have!"

The listing on Ken MacDonald & Co states: "The opportunity has arisen to obtain the former school and premises in the rural location of Scalpay. The premises comprise of four separate buildings.

"The main school building is sectioned into six main rooms benefiting from timber framed double glazing with electric heating and is served with WC facilities.
