The 22-year-old managed to escape from the hospital in Little France reportedly still in cuffs while he was in police custody.
Locals in Danderhall reported seeing a huge police presence in the area so it is suggested the missing prisoner could have connections there.
As well as a large number of officers on the ground, a Police Scotland chopper was out scouring the area on Sunday October 17.
The prisoner has still not been found but police enquiries are ongoing.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 3.30 pm on Sunday, 16 October 2022, a 22-year-old man escaped from the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh whilst under police custody. Enquiries are ongoing to trace him.”
The Scottish Prison Service has been approached for comment.
