Edinburgh police say city centre street reopened after suspicious package found

Edinburgh Police have said that Princes Street has been reopened after emergency services responded to a suspicious package in the city centre.

A bomb disposal unit was sent to the capital on Thursday evening after police say that a man who was acting suspiciously with a bag was spotted.

Officers on the scene erected a cordon on the popular shopping street at around 5.30pm in order to isolate the area in question.

Witnesses told Edinburgh Live that evacuations were taking place as police and other emergency service personnel tried to secure the area. Edinburgh Waverley Station was forced to close its entrances as the incident unfolded.

But Police Scotland have today thanked members of the public for their patience and have said that the commercial city centre street.

They said in a statement on Twitter shortly after 7am: “Princes Street in Edinburgh is now reopened. Thanks to the public for their patience while we dealt with the incident.”

Network Rail Scotland also stated that Waverley Station entrances had reopened as they apologised for any inconvenience caused by the closure last night.

They shared on social media: “All entrances to Edinburgh Waverley have reopened this morning.

“Apologies for any inconvenience if you were affected by the entrance closures last night.”
