Edinburgh police lock down street after 'stabbing' as man rushed to hospital

An Edinburgh street was locked down by police and a man was rushed to hospital following a 'stabbing'.

Officers and emergency services rushed to Giles Street, Leith, around 9pm on Monday night, January 2, as police confirmed a 35-year-old man was assaulted and taken to the Royal Infirmary for treatment.

Officers say the man was later released and enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.

An eye witness on the street captured various images which show a huge emergency service presence including at least five police cars and an ambulance.

Various entrances to the street were taped off and one of the residents added that the incident was not a one off and said locals are scared to the point where they are not letting their children out to play.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live following the worrying incident, they said: "We have constant drug deals through the night and people taking drugs in everyone's stairwells. This means that most of the parents are too scared to let their kids out to play. It's not safe for anyone these days.

"Nothing is being done to help us make our street safe and it is getting turned into some type of ghetto crap here. I think the people of Edinburgh and Leith have a right to know what's happening day in, day out round here."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 9pm on Monday, 2 January, 2023, police were called to a report of a man assaulted in Giles Street, Edinburgh.

"Officers attended and a 35-year-old man was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and later released.

"Police enquiries are ongoing."
