Edinburgh plans for new 'Oche' darts themed restaurant and pub in city centre

Edinburgh could be set for a £3 million darts themed restaurant and pub in the city-centre.

Edinburgh Council recently received notice of a planning application for the new venue on George Street.

The new Oche venture will be the brand’s first in Scotland, after they opened in the USA and Australia recently, with their headquarters based in Oslo, Norway.

Oche is an interactive, darts based competitive socialising concept but unlike other competitive gaming venues they put a lot more focus on their restaurant, and creating a ‘Gastro Gaming ’ experience for their customers.

Punters book 90 minute experiences in their ‘Oches,’ where they are served premium food and beverages. During this time they play a number of Darts based games using state of the art cameras and gaming technology.

The venue will contain 18 oches, a dedicated restaurant area and free standing covers to allow guests to eat and drink while they wait for their game or if they chose to stay and enjoy a post-game celebration.

The vast majority of Oche’s guests make their reservation through their website.

Their event management system ensures that guests arrive and leave in a staggered fashion so that they can provide the best experience possible.

On arrival all guests are required to check in at the reception desk on the ground floor where they are booked into the system.

They are then guided to their station for the night and are given a tutorial on how to play the game.

It is expected that Oche will create up to 50 jobs, with chefs, kitchen team members, waiters, door and reception staff expected to be employed should the planning application be granted. Oche say they will be focusing on hiring local residents when the job adverts go live.

The unit at 80 George Street is currently occupied by Hollister Co on a rolling lease with limited certainty over their long term position.

The planning statement was prepared for Oche by Savills and they state that the ‘sizeable investment’ will boost the city centre’s ‘vitality and viability.’

They said: “Clearly, the occupation of this unit by Oche will contribute positively to this part of the City Centre. Implementation of the proposals will enable a sizeable investment, generating jobs and footfall, all to the benefit of the wider city centre’s vitality and viability.

“Oche’s occupation here would secure a unique long term tenant that positively contributes towards the vibrancy and offering of the City Centre and George Street both during the day and evening.”

The City of Edinburgh Council validated the proposal on Monday March 14 and a decision is expected in the coming weeks and months ahead.
