Edinburgh passengers told to plan ahead as rail strikes target Halloween weekend

ScotRail have announced that passengers should expect severe disruption to their travel plans at the end of October after Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) members stated that they would be going on strike.

The dispute over pay and working conditions is set to rumble on into the Halloween weekend with ScotRail workers, who are members of the RMT, announcing that they will go on strike on Saturday, October 29.

It is not known yet how exactly services will be impacted, but the rail provider has said that they are assessing the situation before giving finer details on what to expect. RMT says that their members have made the decision to hold the 24-hour strike after ScotRail bosses failed to table a reasonable offer.

In a statement on Twitter, they said: “RMT have called a second day of strike action at @ScotRail on Saturday 29th October after railway bosses failed to make an acceptable pay offer.

“We have issued a circular with further information by email and text to all ScotRail members. Now is the time to stand together and win a pay offer that addresses the rising cost of living.

“Let's fight back for pay justice!”

This announcement follows an earlier statement from members of the RMT that said they are set to follow instructions to not work any overtime amid a pay dispute with the operator. Travellers were told by operators to plan ahead for journeys and regularly check for updates as this will cause disruption to services.

The RMT recently rejected ScotRail's latest pay offer of a 5 per cent basic pay increase, a six-year job guarantee, a one-off £500 payment for technology such as mobile phones and improved maternity leave conditions.

Posting an update on the situation to social media, ScotRail said: "Due to an overtime ban by RMT members of ScotRail, we're advising customers to expect some cancellations to services. We will provide as much information as possible on which services are affected across our social media channels, website & app."

The overtime ban came into play last night on Friday October 14. And at the beginning of this week, Monday October 10, a 24-hour period of strikes meant that a handful of services were running from the capital.

On the latest announcement of strikes for October 29, which will impact those attending Halloween events in the capital and across Scotland, ScotRail said: “We have received formal notification from the RMT trade union that its general grades members will take part in 24-hour strike action on Saturday October 29.

“We are now assessing the impact this will have on our services and working on contingency arrangements. We will update customers as soon as this is complete.”
