Edinburgh paramedics given wrong information while attending two-car crash

A duo of Scottish Ambulance Service technicians were radioed with the wrong information as they raced to attend a serious road traffic collision near Edinburgh, at the Queensferry Crossing.

On new documentary Paramedics on Scene, airing on BBC Scotland, technicians Jason and Billy attend a two-car crash near the Queensferry crossing.

Technicians Jason Smith and Billy De Swarte were given the call to attend a two-car crash on the roundabout at North Queensferry, just half a mile from the Queensferry Crossing.

However, when they arrived at the scene, the supposed accident was nowhere to be found - leaving the pair in confusion.

After circling the area for an extra few minutes, the ambulance comes to a lay-by and eagle-eyed Billy spots the two patients standing outside their vehicles.

They pull up and attend the scene of the accident, which is much less severe than first imagined.

Yet, despite both the patients seeming in good spirits and relatively surprised when they realised the ambulance was there to help, Billy spots a worrying injury on one of the drivers.

An elderly male driver has sustained a pretty nasty injury to his left wrist, and is showing signs of an underlying hair-line fracture.

Billy takes the patient into the ambulance and checks all his vital information, including blood pressure, heart rate and also carries out the procedure for a possible concussion - as the airbags have been deployed.

After assessing the situation, Billy is still concerned about the swelling around the man's wrist, and sends him to the minor injuries unit for an X-ray, to rule out any possible bone damage.

After the police arrive to asses the damage on both vehicles and ensure both parties have given their insurance details, technician Jason highlights the importance of safety in vehicles in the modern day.

Jason said: "In these newer, high-end vehicles, the safety measures really are excellent, much better than they were previously.

"At a road accident like this one, you can arrive at the scene to see a car with severe damage, but the occupants of the vehicle are totally fine apart from minor scrapes.

"It is a testament to safety measures being taken seriously, and it makes our job a lot more efficient when we attend road traffic collisions daily."

The next episode of Paramedics on Scene will be made available on Tuesday, May 24 at 8pm on BBC Scotland.
