Edinburgh neighbours in disbelief after two local 'friendly' men found dead at flats

Shocked neighbours have told of their horror after the bodies of two men were found in their block of flats.

Residents of Greendykes House in Greendykes Road, Niddrie, woke on Wednesday morning to find police officers combing their neighbourhood as a major investigation got underway.

Officers had raced to the high-rise after receiving a concerned report at around 8.25pm on Tuesday November 1.

One local told Edinburgh Live he thought a father and son lived in the flat where the bodies were found. He added: "There was a boy next door they were friendly with and they were always really nice to him.

"At 5pm there was one police car there. Then I went up to watch the footy but when I came back down around 9.30pm, there were police everywhere like there is just now. I think I knows exactly who it is that died by face and I don't think they were into drugs or anything like that."

And the worried local said the area was beginning to earn a a bad reputation for violence. He added: "This place is becoming terrible. A boy was killed in May just round the corner from here.

"It's shocking as I was coming home with my granddaughter when I first found that something had happened. Trouble is rife around here and police seem to do nothing."

Greendykes House was still cordoned off on Wednesday afternoon as police launched their investigation. A nearby footpath was also sealed off.

Locals saw forensic officers donning white suits and gloves in the lobby of the flats while a police photographer was spotted taking pictures of bins. A white Audi car was seen being taken away from the car park outside the flats.

A resident of nearby Wauchope House said: “Police won’t tell us anything about what has happened. My mate stays in the block where they found the bodies and all they’ll say to him is that it was a serious incident.

“I’ve just come round to chap my pals' door but it looks like they aren’t letting anyone in. I saw police racing past a roundabout at about 1pm in Niddrie earlier today.”

A source told Edinburgh Live earlier in the day that officers were knocking on doors and questioning locals, as well as tracking the movements of residents leaving the premises.

Grim images show the bleak tower blocks taped off with dozens of officers scouring the area. Several police cars were spotted at the scene as well as a command unit.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 8.25pm on Tuesday, 1 November 2022, police attended a report of an incident at a flat in Greendykes Road in Edinburgh."

Adding: “Two men were pronounced dead at the scene and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
