Edinburgh neighbourhood named in top 10 'coolest' places to live in the UK

A new study has revealed Leith is one of the ‘coolest’ neighbourhoods to live in across the country.

The survey, which was voted for by the general public, ended up with Leith taking seventh place in their list. It was the only Scottish area listed in the top 10, with Glasgow’s west end taking 12th spot.

Naturecan, the CBD products company who did the study, described Leith in the research. They said: “A buzzing port district, home to hip creatives and trendy waterfront bistros.

“The movie Trainspotting was based there.”

Taking first place was Cornwall’s Polperro, with second place going to Wells-next-the-sea in Norfolk. Third place went to Marlow in Buckinghamshire, while Morecambe in Lancashire got fourth place.

The Baltic Triangle in Liverpool, and Bruton in Somerset followed before Leith. Harbourside in Bristol, Ely in Cambridgeshire, and Windermere in Cumbria were the last three in the top ten.

Other Scottish areas in the top 50 included Aberdeen’s Rosemount, which came in 27th. Broughty Ferry in Dundee swooped in at 33rd.

In 2021, Time Out decided Leith was the fourth ‘coolest’ city in the entire world. The judges for Time Out were impressed by events like Leith Festival and Edinburgh Mela.

At the time, they said the regeneration of the area was giving Leith a new ‘lease of life.’ They added: “Once Scotland’s main trade port, Leith’s connection to industry stretches back centuries.

“Today, however, the north Edinburgh neighbourhood is better known as a cultural hotspot, home to big arts institutions and up-and-coming businesses alike. In recent years, several buildings have been given a new lease of life, including long-abandoned Leith Theatre and the nearby Biscuit Factory, which houses more than 30 creative businesses and its own performance space.

“The Leith Arches, meanwhile, is a two-tiered pub and events space on the old Caledonian Leith Line – complete with rotating food vendors, and a programme of wellness events.”
