Edinburgh map shows worst crime hotspots from the last 12 years and safest areas

A map of Edinburgh crimes shows which parts of the city feature the highest number of reports and which are relatively peaceful.

The map, pulled together by a French data scientist shows crime reports from the last 12 years all over Edinburgh.

The areas with the most reported crimes are coloured red while more supposedly more peaceful areas are yellow with the quietest places in green.

However the map raises some questions as to how accurate a picture it paints of Edinburgh’s crime hotspots between 2010 and 2022.

The red areas like the town centre and Leith might just have more reports because they have a higher population than other areas. It’s also possible city-centre night spots may yield more low-level reports of drunken brawls.

The density of shops in commercial town centre areas will also generate more shoplifting reports than predominantly residential areas.

Also the source, newspaper and police reports, means that only ‘newsworthy’ crimes will feature on the map - all that being said it still does make for fascinating reading.

If you click the option to ‘Highlight each incident with a little red marker’ you can check what crimes were committed in your neighbourhood over the past 12 years.
