Edinburgh M8 drivers warned as overnight works to see motorway close

Edinburgh drivers have been warned that the M8 will be partially closed on Friday (May 20) for essential works.

BEAR Scotland have reminded motorists to take an alternative route after a section of the road will be shut off near Junction 4.

Working overnight to resurface the eastbound carriageway, the M8 will be shut between Junction 4 and 4a to allow teams safe access to the road.

Closing at 8.30pm, the section will be shut off completely until 6am on Saturday (May 21.)

A signed diversion route will be in place directing eastbound traffic by taking motorists off at Junction 4a EB and diverting them B7006, A706, A801 before returning to the M8 at Junction 4. This diversion will add approximately 5 minutes and 1.3 miles to affected journeys.

Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will improve ride quality and safety for motorists using these sections of the M8.

“Carriageway closures are essential for safety, however we’ve planned the works to take place overnight to minimise any disruption. We thank motorists in advance for their patience.”

Consultation has been carried out with emergency services and relevant stakeholders to share information about the project in advance.
