Edinburgh locals were awoken by dozens of loud bangs during the night, with many believing they sounded like gun shots.
Residents in east of the city took to social media early on Wednesday morning, all equally puzzled at what was going on. The noise was thought to be fireworks being let off within Holyrood Park.
Starting around 3:30am and continuing for over an hour, one resident even left their flat to get some sort of explanation as to what all the commotion was about.

They took to social media later that morning.
The wrote: "Anybody else been hearing the loud bangs going off in Edinburgh since 3.30am-ish? I’m between Easter Road and Meadowbank and it sounds like fireworks, the one o’ clock gun or a shotgun, but it’s still only 4:30 in the morning just now."
Other reported that the bangs sounded like gun shots which had originated from Arthur's Seat. Earlier in the morning, around 2:30am, more residents were awoken when an aircraft was also heard circling the city. A flight path shows the small plane travelling multiple times around above the city and as far as West Lothian.
Multiple users on social media believed the noise was coming from St Anthony's Chapel in Holyrood Park after going to investigate.
Another Twitter user posted: "Can anyone in Edinburgh hear what sounds like the one o'clock gun? It’s been going on since just after 4am, sounds pretty ominous to me. Also, just before, it sounded like machine gun fire or fireworks, I’m pretty scared."
Someone who lives closer to Holyrood Park commented: "It's fireworks in Holyrood Park. I was woken up by them.
"I have no idea why they were being fired at this time in the night."
