Edinburgh locals stunned as incredible meteor falls through sky with blue flames

Locals across Edinburgh and Scotland were captivated by the sky on Saturday as a meteor whizzed past the Earth.

Stargazers as well as those in the right place at the right time were treated to the incredible space event as the rock created a colourful display in the night sky.

Thankfully, Saturday night had seen clear skies, with the stars in full view as the meteor came through the atmosphere.

Picked up on professional cameras as well as those with dash-cams, the meteor brought blue and green flames along with it as it burnt in the night sky.

Coming crashing towards the ground, many in Edinburgh were lucky enough to see the event, which took place at around 6.50pm, reports the Record.

Also being spotted in Glasgow and Lanarkshire, one onlooker said: "It appeared from nowhere and travelled at speed, losing altitude as it passed."

The UK Meteor Network - @UKMeteorNetwork - Tweeted: "Large #fireball meteor spotted tonight 29 Jan 2022 at 18:48:26 UT from several UKMON cameras."

Una Hogan replied: "Saw this blue tailed fireball on our way from Glasgow to Edinburgh this evening... Looked like it was right in front of us! Spectacular!"

Richie Hancox said: "Saw this in Perthshire, looked to have a bright green tail."

And Timur Tugalev posted: "Saw it over Edinburgh's Holyrood Park. It was Spectacular!"

Gary S said: "Saw it in Paisley!!! Caught it on dashcam too."
