Edinburgh locals in touching tributes to tragic cyclist killed on tram tracks

Hundreds of Edinburgh locals gathered tonight (May 31) to pay tribute to a cyclist killed on tram tracks five years ago at the end of Princes Street.

Zhi Min Soh died after being struck by a mini bus on May 31 back in 2017.

Although it was not confirmed by police, it was widely reported that the tyre of her bike had got caught in the tram tracks causing her to fall to the ground.

Five years on from her death, a vigil took place organised by cycling organisation Infrasisters who advocate for safer cycle routes in the capital.

The memorial began at the site of the tragic incident with the late student's favourite song, Paradise by Coldplay, being played to the crowds of locals and cyclists.

The vigil was beautiful but heart-wrenching as many locals stood in silence to remember the young student who lost her life while studying in the capital.

Speakers at the event told how the 23-year-old was living her dream after being awarded a scholarship to study in Edinburgh and spent her time volunteering and tutoring kids.

A minute silence was observed while locals of all ages laid flowers next to the road.

Local teacher, Hayley Weetman who spoke at the event said: "We cannot take away the pain and loss that Zhi Min Soh's friends and family must feel but I hope it will give them some comfort to see that the people of Edinburgh care.

"Zhi Min's parents specifically wanted to thank everyone who is attending today."

She continued: "I'm so sad about the unfairness of what happened to Zhi Min, what a waste of a wonderful young life all because the safety of cyclists are not taken seriously enough.

"I think Zhi Min touched many peoples lives before and after her death.

"I tried to look for a memorial fund in Zhi Min's memory instead I found things on the internet that turned Zhi Min's into a real person for me, a person I was so sad wasn't here anymore.

"I found out that how she was sponsoring a child in India and had been a volunteer for Burmese refugee children.

"She had worked hard to get top grades in school and to obtain a scholarship to study here, this should have been a chance of a lifetime not the end of one."

There has still not been a fatal accident inquiry into Zhi Min Soh's death and activists still have grave concerns about the safety for cyclists travelling on the route.
