Edinburgh locals could see Northern Lights tonight ahead of Valentine's Day

With Valentine's Day approaching, many couples in or around Edinburgh will be looking forward to a nice romantic meal or a movie night under the blanket.

Another popular option is a leisurely stroll along a beach or lying gazing at the stars. As luck would have it, one of the world's most beautiful phenomena could be visible from a beauty spot in the capital.

If you haven't guessed already, we're alluding to the Northern Lights. According to the Met Office, one of the best spots for star-gazing - quite literally - at Blackford Hill, could be a prime location to witness the aurora borealis.

As the Record reports, a list of nine beauty spots to watch the Northern Lights during the evening includes Blackford Hill in Edinburgh. As if that wasn't good enough, the forecast indicates that the skies are set to be clear.

The Met Office's space weather forecast says: "A couple of possible Coronal Mass Ejection glancing blows later on 13th and during 14th may give some enhancement to the auroral oval, although this is low confidence.

"There is a chance of aurora reaching northern Scotland, and just a slight chance of reaching further south to Northern Ireland and northern England."

Fortunately, the forecast appears to be in our favour. The forecaster says: "Clear spells although probably turning cloudier/breezier in the west overnight with outbreaks of rain developing over Northern Ireland and perhaps southwest Scotland by dawn. Some patchy fog, especially southeast England."

To see the lights, it's best to head away from the cities and all of the light pollution to view the night sky - weather permitting of course.

With Blackford Hill home to the famous Royal Observatory building, what better spot in the capital is there to go Northern Light hunting? If you can't make it that far out of the city, then a trip up Arthur's Seat is also recommended for stargazing though be sure to take torches and lamps for the walk.
