Edinburgh locals concerned as huge bonfire left burning next to kids' park and houses

Edinburgh locals have reported concerns as a huge bonfire was left burning next to a children's park and several houses in the Craigmillar area.

The blaze was left alight shortly after 18.00 on Saturday November 5 as residents across the city celebrate Guy Fawkes night but locals became concerned as bikes, televisions and furniture was thrown into the fire and it was left unaccomponied.

Images show the ferocious flames burning in the middle of the housing estate and debris from burnt out items thrown in the fire such as bicycles, electronic equipment and furniture can be seen smouldering in the ashes.

Nearby fireworks were being shot into the air as neighbours and kids gathered outside to watch.

One local said: "The bonfire was huge I could see it burning from a street away. There were lots of very loud popping banging fireworks going off from all directions, it sounded like gun shots and bombs going off, behind house, in front of house.

"It is very loud and scary for kids and pets. I had to go out to work and leave the radios on loud for the cat as it was petrified."

In preparation for bonfire night police in Edinburgh announced that they have set up various dispersal zones to tackle potential crime linked to Bonfire Night and the misuse of fireworks and pyrotechnics.

Several zones across the city have been set up where people will not be allowed to gather is to combat antisocial behaviour and disorder over the weekend leading up to Bonfire Night.

The zones covers areas in North East, North West, South East and South West Edinburgh and will be in operation between 2pm and 12am Friday November 4 to Monday November 6.

This means that they can instruct any people in groups of two or more who are congregating and behaving in an antisocial manner to disperse, and if they do not live there to leave the zones, and then not to return for up to 24 hours.

If they do return, they can be arrested.
