A history lover from Edinburgh has captured evidence of the old stone-lined roadway hidden under the modern tarmac placed on top.
The local was out on a walk in the capital when she snapped a photo of Prince Regent Street in Leith, just off of North Junction Street. She later discovered that the holes formed in the road revealed the historic setts underneath.
Posting on a Facebook page dedicated to the history of Edinburgh, the photographer wrote: "Interesting Street off North Junction Street, Leith, Edinburgh - Prince Regent Street....should have kept the cobbled stones I reckon!"

This post garnered a lot of attention from fellow history lovers, many of which called for the return of setts and cobbles all over town.
One Facebook user wrote: "Bring back setts / cobbles all over town. Then no more crap tar jobs. Long term savings on maintenance.
"Slower traffic too and pedestrians can hear even quiet electric cars coming - Lives saved. Also aesthetically pleasing. Raises the aesthetic standard of the city."
Another said: "I agree with that don't know why they decided to change the streets as cobbles were fine, they would have been still going strong."
And a third wrote: "Definitely. I reckon where there are cobbles, leave the roads alone! They appear to go on forever and l think look nicer."

"I believe it's called drifting now and there is competitions and stuff!"
One said: "Cobbled streets are an easy and aesthetically pleasing way to ensure everyone sticks to 20 mph.
"You want less traffic volume easy cobble everywhere and no one will want to drive in either stuff traffic ease by congestion just cobble every street."
Meanwhile, one commented: "Quite obvious that the cobbles had a longer life. Recobble. Cheaper in the long run!"
And finally, one concluded: "It’s criminal that they tarmac over them. Cobbles are much more hard wearing and every European city is installing cobbles in the city centres!"
