Edinburgh King Charles fans travel miles to 'witness history in the making'

Thousands of people lined the streets of the Old Town to show their support to King Charles III on his visit to Edinburgh to receive the Honours of Scotland.

On the head of state's first visit to the city since being crowned in May, the Royal Mile was filled with people for the occasion - dubbed by some as a "mini-coronation".

As part of the celebration, the King attended a ceremony at St Giles' Cathedral accompanied by Camila Queen Consort, along with Prince William and Kate Middleton. This was conducted by a magnificent procession of cavalry and bagpipers with a flypast by the Red Arrows.

On this momentous event, Edinburgh Live went to the bottom of the Royal Mile where a massive congregation of people were anxiously waiting to spot King Charles III and the rest of the Royal Family.

David Seton, 40, and his son, Sam, 11, from Australia, were on a month-long trip to the UK from Down Under and decided to come to Edinburgh for the Royal visit.

The dad, from Melbourne, said: "We were scheduled to come to Edinburgh for this and wanted to go into the castle but it's obviously closed for this. Then we realised this was on and thought this is even better.

"As Australians, it is really interesting to observe what is happening in Edinburgh today. The crowds are amazing and a lot of people are about and I wasn't really sure what to expect so it is a happy surprise."

One family from Crieff used the Royal celebration as a family day out with three generations coming together for the "mini-coronation".

Granny Jane said: "It's all about making history and we are all really excited to be here in Edinburgh for this occasion with three generations to watch this pageant which is the first time in Edinburgh for Charles.

"It is just extraordinary how many people have turned up for this, two hours before the procession, and for the occasion, we packed a picnic and camped out on this spot to see the Royals."

A history student at the University of Edinburgh, Fraser Gray came down to "show loyalty to the king" and welcome Charles on his first visit to the city since being crowned.

The 27-year-old said: "I think it is a good tradition to still have a Royal Family and think it is more interesting than having a President. Monarchy elevates society and it captures the imagination more than a republic ever could.

"People have an imagination and it is great to see the creative side of the monarchy being supported in Edinburgh today on a day like this. I think it is more natural to support one person over one's life than multiple elected heads of state."

Tom said: "We missed the coronation but we literally just moved here and when we heard that there would be a mini-coronation we got really excited.

"It's great to see so many people have shown up to show their support. After this, we'll hit a few bars and celebrate in the great weather that has graced the capital."
