Edinburgh hotel apologises after women on Christmas trip 'locked out of bar' at 3pm

An Edinburgh hotel has apologised after a guest hit back after a girl's night out.

The guest took to Tripadvisor to explain how they were told to wait until their room at Malmaison in Leith was ready and claimed the service in the restaurant was slow.

She wrote: "We booked to stay for a girls' Christmas night away. Rooms were okay. We had trouble getting into the bar after check in as it was locked. Reception had told another couple they could go wait in the bar as their room wasn’t ready.

"They were told due to issue with cleaning staff. Reception said they would ask staff to open the bar - this was at 3pm.

"Finally got in ordered drinks and bar snacks. Food took some time to arrive but it was quite good. Evening sitting for dinner at 7.15pm for nine of us. We had been told initially they might not be able to fit us in but did then agree. There was only one other table with party of four when we arrived and they were having dessert. Service was extremely slow!

"Took ages to get drinks order and sat waiting for our food order to eventually be taken. Starters arrived eventually at 8pm. We finally got dessert around 9.45pm! There was clearly a staffing issue in which case the hotel should never have taken our booking.

"The food was actually quite good when we got it but service was terrible and really let the hotel down. Only three other tables occupied after us during the three hours it took for us to get dinner - One gentlemen on his own one couple and a group of three ladies - so the restaurant was clearly not busy.

"Breakfast was fine. We only had continental nothing cooked so cannot comment on timescale for that. Definitely would not return for another meal. Shame as I had lunch there a number of years ago with my husband and it was so much better. Lack of staff is clearly showing and a problem.

The hotel quickly responded apologising and explained that the comments had been passed on.

The manager said: "Thank you for visiting Malmaison Edinburgh in Leith and for taking time to share your feedback.
I'm very sorry to hear you felt disappointed with your dinner service and that you experienced unusually long wait for your drinks and food. I'm happy to hear you did enjoy your food though. Your comments have been shared with both Brasserie and Kitchen and all possible improvements will be made to ensure all service is delivered in timely manner."

Malmaison in Edinburgh is ranked highly on Tripadvisor with a rating of four points. Many guests have praised it on its location, cleanliess and service.

Another customer review said: "We visited the Mal down in Leith for drinks and food and had a fantastic stay! The food was absolutely delicious, we opted for steaks and the classic Mal Burger and they were cooked to perfection!

"Many thanks to the chef and all kitchen staff!! The restaurant was super clean and all the staff that served us were great and professional, but special thanks to Dominic the Brasserie supervisor who was absolutely amazing in his job and super friendly! Also at reception Janeta? (I am sorry if I spell your name wrong) the supervisor was superb and ultra friendly with a great vibe! Many thanks for an unforgettable experience guys! See you soon."
