Edinburgh heatwave: Mum shares 'sprinkler on a budget' hack amid soaring temperatures

Temperatures in Edinburgh are continuing to soar, with highs of up to 24 degrees Celsius.

With the heatwave showing no signs of slowing down, people across the city will be looking for ways to keep cool. With the cost of living crisis continuing to worsen, though, this is easier said than done.

For those who don't have the budget to pay for an air conditioning unit or a fancy sprinkler system, one woman may have just come up with a solution. All that's needed is a plastic water bottle and a hose.

She took to Facebook to share the idea with others. Writing on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group, she said: "My daughter wanted to make something with a bottle - thanks google! All about saving the £££ she’s buzzing with it … got a sprinkler without leaving the house.

"I just burnt 3 small holes with a lighter, obv the bigger and more holes, the bigger the swamp in your garden."

Before long, the post had attracted over 750 likes and more than 220 comments. Amid sweltering temperatures, Facebook users were quick to give their verdict.

One shared: "I did similar thing years ago for my dogs. Hung water bottle from washing line after putting holes in it. My dogs loved running under the shower in the garden."

"That's brilliant thank you I am going to do this and share with group of nursery age mums," a second agreed.

"Great idea and money saver," said a third, while a fourth echoed: "Great idea....just what I need, thanks for sharing!"

One person called it a "great idea" (Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group)

A fifth stated: "Very impressive! What good idea."

Meanwhile, a sixth quipped: "Sprinkler on a budget".

One Facebook user suggested an alternative way to make the homemade sprinkler without a lighter, writing: "I did this but punctured more holes & hung it from mi washing line over grandkids paddling pool ~ brilliant!"
