Edinburgh gunman jailed after shooting up couple's home in attempted murder bid

A gunman who repeatedly blasted a couple's home while they were inside has been jailed for nine years. Aaron Gray jumped out a car before firing at the property in Edinburgh's Burdiehouse Avenue on August 20 2021.

The 34 year-old convicted thug and getaway driver Liam Bevan, 34, then fled the scene. No one was fortunately hurt following the daylight shooting, which occurred as youngsters played in the street.

Gray has now been locked up after he pled guilty to an attempted murder charge at the High Court in Glasgow. Bevan was sentenced to four years and 10 months after he admitted being involved in the culpable and reckless discharge of a firearm.

The hearing was told how Stephen Wernham and his partner Angela Smith lived at the property. Around 8.40pm, Bevan pulled up in the street in a black Ford Fiesta.

Prosecutor John McElroy KC said: "Gray exited and approached the path. He was wearing dark clothing with a hood up. He shouted in the direction of (the property) whilst holding a handgun.

"Gray began shooting in the direction of the house. Multiple loud bangs were heard which sounded like gunshots."

Gray got back in the car before the vehicle sped off. Mr Wernham was meantime heard to shout: "Dodie's shot at my wife."

Miss Smith had been standing at a window when the gun was fired. Police soon arrived and found four bullet casings outside the house.

A bullet was also discovered wedged in the frame of a shattered window. No gun was found, but the weapon is believed to have been a Glock self-loading pistol.

The getaway car was discovered on August 25 abandoned in Prestonpans, East Lothian. Police then spotted Bevan walking towards where the car was.

Mr McElroy said he "appeared surprised" and claimed he was in the area with his work. Labourer Bevan added: "I got dropped off on the main road and came up here to try and get the bus home."

Gray was held on September 3 in the car park of the Hillpark Hotel in Edinburgh. Gray will also be supervised for a further four years on his release.

It emerged he already had a lengthy history of violence including a seven-year high court sentence in 2012.
