Edinburgh George IV Bridge incident: Man falls from building as police race to scene

Emergency services have been deployed to a major Edinburgh city centre street on Thursday morning after a man plunged onto the street.

Eye witnesses reported police officers close to the Central Library on George IV Bridge while officers were also spotted on the Cowgate below.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were made aware of a man having fallen from a height on Cowgate in Edinburgh around 10am on Thursday, 17 March, 2022. Emergency services are currently in attendance.”

Steven Brown tweeted: "Hearing from our drivers that there is a major incident at George IV Bridge."

Photos shared with Edinburgh Live showed police vans closing off the Cowgate close to a building site.

Bus passengers, meanwhile, reported delays to services as traffic backed up along George IV Bridge.

Anna tweeted: "Went through on a bus about 10mins ago. Big delays, police with closed road sign and cones blocking southbound at royal mile. However wasn't clear whether signs/ cones were being put out or taken in."

Although drivers were told to expect delays, George IV Bridge is understood to be open.

Edinburgh Travel News tweeted: "Just been told there's no closure in place. Police are there but no closure at George IV Bridge/Royal Mile. Keep you all posted if we get any more info on this."

One eye witness described the scene to Edinburgh Live and told how the Cowgate was closed off by emergency services.

He said: "The area underneath George IV Bridge is cordoned off with various ambulances and police cars surrounding the area at the start of Cowgate just leaving the Grassmarket.

"It looks like it’s related to the scaffolding on the bridge as around 30/40 workers are all gathered at the top of Victoria street speaking amongst themselves."

He added: "There’s also two police officers standing with a small cordon over looking the incident on the top of the bridge.

"Various other sirens can still be heard racing to the scene."
