Edinburgh Fopp on Rose Street could be replaced by new late night bar Mojo

A longstanding and much-loved Fopp music store could soon be replaced by a new late-night bar.

Edinburgh City Council are currently reviewing plans which would see the Rose Street space transformed to accommodate Mojo, a restaurant, cafe and cocktail bar with the chain enjoying success across cities in the north of England.

The planning application, made on behalf of Voodoo Doll Ltd, seeks a change from Class 1 (retail) to Class 3 (food and drink) for the 7-15 Rose Street premises and states: "The proposed food and drink use as Mojo will provide day-time, evening and late-night/early hours opening (11:00 – 02:00) comprising predominantly customer seating with vertical drinking areas. Food and drink menus will be provided with both table and bar service.

"The day-time opening ensures an active street use appropriate to the Rose Street context.

"The unit is currently occupied by Fopp Records."

Furthermore, it's felt the new bar 'will positively contribute to character and vitality' of the city centre.

The proposal continues: "The Applicant has successfully run and managed Mojo bars in Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham, Sheffield and Harrogate, with the proposed site offering an ideal opportunity to further expand the business in Edinburgh.

"It is considered that the proposed use of this retail unit as a mixed restaurant, café and cocktail bar will positively contribute to character and vitality of Edinburgh city centre in accordance with the national planning guidance and adopted Development Plan policy."

Drawings submitted with the application show plans to have dining and drinking space across both ground and first floor, with the kitchen serving the likes of pizza, wraps and sandwiches.

Mojo, which boasts the tag-line 'music for the people, food for the soul, good times forever', currently has bars in Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham, Harrogate and Sheffield. To find out more about Mojo, you can visit their website here.
