A fire has broken out on Nicolson Square in Edinburgh on Monday morning after a concerned person spotted the smoke from a few streets away.

The worried resident was walking along East Preston Street when she spotted the dark smoke billowing into the sky in the capital, and wrote on Twitter: "Looks like a big fire somewhere in town #Edinburgh."

The photographs depict thick, dark smoke billowing out from behind the Surgeon's Hall Museum in Edinburgh, sparking concern.

The passer-by was unsure as to where the fire had originated, stating that the smoke was "quite dark", and that she couldn't place where it was coming from.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson confirmed that the fire was not within a building but rather inside Nicolson Square itself.
