Edinburgh fire sees huge emergency service response as 20 people treated

A woman has been taken to hospital and 19 others treated by paramedics after a fire at a tenement in Edinburgh.

Fire crews were called to reports of a blaze at a three-storey building on Gorgie Road in the capital around 9am on Tuesday, July 4.

The fire was first reported within the stairs of a property, according to Edinburgh Live.

As a result of the blaze paramedics from the Scottish Ambulance Service treated 20 people, three of which were helped to safety by firefighters, with one taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Four appliances were dispatched as part of the response.

The fire has since been extinguished. An eyewitness told how residents have been unable to yet get access back into the building.

They said: "There are a ton of emergency service vehicles here. There are three fire engines, three ambulances and at least two police cars.

"Police have set up a cordon and it looks like residents can't get back into the building yet. There are multiple people inside the cordon standing outside local businesses, I certainly can’t see any smoke or sign of fire so that suggests it is under control."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 8.52am on Tuesday, 4 July to reports of a dwelling fire in Edinburgh.

"Operations Control mobilised four appliances to the city's Gorgie Road, where firefighters were met by a fire within a three-storey tenement building.

"Crews helped lead three casualties to safety before passing them into the care of Scottish Ambulance Service personnel. A total of 20 casualties were in the care of paramedics. One casualty was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

"Firefighters extinguished the fire and crews have now left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”

A Police Scotland statement read: "We were called around 9.05 am on Tuesday, 4 July to a report of a fire at a block of flats on Gorgie Road, Edinburgh.

"Emergency services attended and a woman was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with non-life threatening injuries. The block was evacuated while the fire was put out by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. Enquiries to establish the full circumstances are ongoing."
