Edinburgh Festival Fringe: Weather forecast as 650 street performers take over New Town

Thousands are set to descend on Edinburgh this month as the Festival Fringe has officially started with a full programme for the first time since 2019.

With lots of street performances and punters rushing between venues, it is wise to check the weather if you're planning on spending a day at the festival. Of course, Scotland isn't known for its tropical climate and it might be worth always packing an umbrella on the safe side.

The Met Office has issued the weekend forecast for the first few days at Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Overall for this weekend, it looks like a mixed bag with sunshine and rain.

As well as the Royal Mile acting as a 'hub' for the festival, 650 street acts will also pop up in the New Town. Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society are delighted to announce a full programme of activity for the new Taster Stages in St Andrew Square and Cathedral Square in St James Quarter.

Scheduled daily from 11:00 – 18:00, the new stages will bring a taster of the Fringe to the New Town, with performers from 170 shows participating in 650 performances across both stages.

Cllr Val Walker, Culture and Communities Convener, City of Edinburgh Council, said: This is a very special year for the Fringe, not only does it see the return of an amazing programme of artists and performers from around the world, it also marks 75 years of this extraordinary festival. This exciting addition of new sites offering taster performances from the Fringe’s jam-packed programme brings a wider opportunity for current and potential Fringe fans to sample some of the 650 acts who will be entertaining audiences this month.”

Here's what we can expect the weather to be doing in Edinburgh this weekend.

Friday

The Met Office predict light showers from 1pm but they will quickly clear up and while it will be cloudy, the sun will peep through the clouds during the day. By 6pm, the clouds will clear for a while before returning by 8pm.

If you've got late night showings, it's worth noting that the sun will set at 9.15pm tonight.

Saturday

While many will wake up to a bit of sunshine in the early morning, the Met Office forecast cloud and some showers for Saturday. Showers will begin at 8am and are expected to clear up by 10am. However temperatures are expected to be mild, reaching 17C by 4pm.

Sunday

Similar to Friday, Sunday is set to be cloudy with sunny intervals. But the Met Office warn to expect brisk winds of up to 30mph by 1pm. This will continue right through to 4pm in the afternoon when temperatures will also reach 19C.

Looking at the week ahead, temperatures are set to rise into the 20s with plenty of sunshine for festival-goers to enjoys.
