Edinburgh Festival Fringe: Cheap hotels for under £100 a night as found by us

The countdown for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe has begun and locals are preparing for the surge of tourists and performers.

Come August, Edinburgh will come alive with street acts and venues popping up in, what feels like, every nook and cranny. Naturally this is a goldmine for businesses and hotel prices have soared.

If you're looking to stay in the city centre, there isn't much time left to book as Booking.com has alerted customers that the majority of hotels are booked up over this month - and if you're looking for a budget friendly stay, there's a limited choice.

If you're looking for hotel in Edinburgh for under £50, shared dormitories in hostels would be your best choice. As for private hotel rooms under £100, you'd be lucky to get something, but luckily we found a selection - but you better be quick as they're likely to get snapped up.

Depending on dates, your price and availability will change. For the purpose of this, we looked at a check in date of August 15-16. The Edinburgh Festival fringe starts on August 5-27, and we noticed a jump even from August 2 to the the date of the Fringe with some accommodation. The Britannia Hotel, for example was charging £99 on August 2 but on August 8, it jumped up to £149.

Looking on Booking.com we unfortunately found a small number of private rooms available to stay in on August 15 for under £100, while there were more shared rooms in hostels available if you're just looking for somewhere to rest to your head.

The Colour Flat

Managed by a private host costs £58 for the night, at the time of writing. While breakfast is included, it is a sofa bed that is on offer. The Colour Flat is situated on Craigentinny Road, north east of Edinburgh between Portobello Road and Restalrig, just 12 minutes walk from the beach. You can see more information here.

Ardmillan Hotel

On Ardmillan Terrace, just off Gorgie Road, you can get a single bed at Ardmillan Hotel for £72. It's non refundable unless you pay an extra £8 which offers you free cancellation until 11.59pm on August 12.

There are a number of buses that can take you right to the Royal Mile in just 24 minutes, if you want to check out the street performers. You can see more information and details of the hotel here.

Destiny Student - Meadow Court

Now term time is over, student accommodation isn't wasting the space and is offering it up for tourists. We found a double room with shared bathroom £93 on Booking.com. See more here.

Destiny Student - Shrubill Campus

Student accommodation is being let out for tourists (Booking.com)

With the same company, you can get a double room with private bathroom for £97 in Leith which is just a 20 minute walk to Princes Street. You can see more information here.
