Independent fashion boutique Jane Davidson is set to close after 53 years.
In a letter to customers, proprietor Sarah Murray paid tribute to loyal shoppers who have frequented the Thistle Street store since her mother opened it in 1969.
“Over the decades it has become somewhat of an institution on the Edinburgh fashion scene, showcasing international fashion brands including Jimmy Choo, Roland Mouret and more recently, The Vampire’s Wife, Dries Van Noten, and Isabel Marant,“ she wrote.
“The boutique has been a constant presence in my life and I have absolutely loved my time running the business - our customers have been incredibly loyal and many of them have become dear friends to both me and my mum.
“As difficult as this decision has been, I am looking forward to spending much more time with friends and family, especially my two daughters.”
The store will close on 14 December, with the remaining stock set to be sold off from tomorrow, with price reductions offered across all ranges.
The business was founded in The Grassmarket by the eponymous Jane Davidson, now Jane Hall. The original boutique sold only British brands such as Jean Muir, Ozzie Clark, and Jean Varon and was attached to a church in the Old Town.
It then moved to a Georgian townhouse on Thistle Street in 1985, growing steadily since it opened on the ground floor of its current site, to expand over four floors in the last 10 years. Jane's daughter Sarah took over running the store in 1997.
