Edinburgh emergency services rush to city centre street in 'standoff with man'

Emergency services rushed to a busy Edinburgh city centre street on Sunday evening after two youths allegedly climbed up some scaffolding on the side of a building.

Police, the fire service and paramedics were all present on the corner of George Street and Frederick Street around 11pm on March 5 following the concerning reports.

One eye witness at the scene described one man "waving building materials around" during a standoff as a police cordon can be seen set up on the busy street.

Police confirmed that two youths had climbed onto the scaffolding and eventually came down and were uninjured.

The building in question on at the top of Frederick Street is currently undergoing extensive building work and is surrounded by scaffolding over multiple storeys.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Around 8.55 pm on Sunday, 5 March 2023, police attended a report of two youths on scaffolding in George Street at the corner of Frederick Street, Edinburgh.

"Police and SFRS attended and both the boys came down from the scaffolding. They were uninjured.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances of the incident."
