Edinburgh drivers facing huge rush hour delays as smash closes M8 carriageway

Edinburgh commuters are facing huge travel delays due to four-vehicle smash which has resulted in the closure of a busy M8 junction.

Junction 3 near Livingston is currently closed due to the accident, which occurred around 8:20am on Tuesday, January 10.

Police are on the scene and have tweeted a short statement advising road users to use an alternative route, as well as confirming that four vehicles are involved in the incident.

They tweeted: "The M8 eastbound at J3, prior to Livingson offslip, is currently closed due to a road traffic collision. Emergency services are on the scene. Motorists are advised to take alternative routes."

Alerting road users to the incident and urging motorists to approach with care, Traffic Scotland tweeted: "NEW: 08:20 M8 Junction 3. The Eastbound carriageway is currently restricted due to a collision. Police and TRISS are en-route. TakeCare on approach."

Live traffic cameras from the scene show large tailbacks starting to form from Harthill to Livingston as commuters make their way to work.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 8.15am on Tuesday, 10 January 2022, police received a report of a road crash involving four vehicles on the M8 eastbound at J3. Emergency services are on the scene and dealing with the incident. The M8 is currently closed. We have no further details at this stage."
