Edinburgh driver slams inaction over dangerous pothole at busy junction

An Edinburgh motorist has hit out at the state of one of their local junction’s as a massive ‘dangerous’ pothole has appeared.

Neil Thompson, who is a delivery driver for one of the major supermarket brands, says that it is only a matter of time before a vehicle or driver is injured by the pothole at the junction between Liberton Brae and Alnwickhill Road.

He first reported the issue 11 days ago on March 14 to Edinburgh City Council and demanded that action be taken to make sure that the busy junction was made safe for motorists and active travellers.

He noticed last Friday that cones had been placed around it by the council and says that he was ‘gobsmacked’ that it had not been fixed.

The council say that the pothole is the responsibility of Scottish Power and that they placed the cones there to make drivers aware of the danger.

Two locals who spoke to Edinburgh Live said that they do not believe the issue has been rectified and they have been left to scratch their heads as the massive pothole causes danger to the general public.

Neil said: “I noticed the cones around the pothole on Friday and I was gobsmacked. It is such a dangerous pothole and the only action they have taken is to place cones around it.

“It shows those responsible do not view the risk to the general public seriously and that their budget must come first.

“On a major road like Liberton Brae this should have been treated more seriously from the outset and fixed within a day.

“I’m a van driver for one of the supermarkets. These badly maintained roads are a problem in some parts of the city but not all.

“West Granton Road is in poor shape and I think Great Junction Street has issues too.

“Marchmont also has a few side streets in need of repair. My car hasn’t suffered damage but the company vans have seen better days because of it.”

A Scottish Power spokesperson said: "We remain in touch with the local council and committed to ensuring the road is in better condition for the local community.

"We are in the process of organising the work required to facilitate repairs and are in discussions with the installation company which undertook the initial installation works. We always work to minimise disruption and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
