Edinburgh double death flat cop shaken by bloodbath scene 'vomited outside from shock'

Police were confronted by a bloodbath after breaking into a flat and finding two men dead inside, it has been claimed.

The bodies of the pair, who have not been officially named, were lying in a first-floor property in the Greendykes Hous e tower block in Niddrie, Edinburgh.

A witness told how a police officer emerged from the flat after the grim find and vomited on the floor.

Residents in the high-rise described an unpleasant smell coming from the address before the men were found.

It’s understood police visited the flat on Tuesday evening after receiving a missing person alert.

A resident, who asked not be to named, said: “One of the victims lived in a flat on the first floor. The other guy who died was his friend who would visit.

“A relative of one of them called police to report him missing. A few officers came round and put a flat door in.

“There had been a horrible smell for a few days from that flat which I’d noticed. A neighbour saw a cop spewing on the landing.

“The police were on their radios describing what had happened. It’s horrific.

“A wee dog, which was taken away by officers, belonged to one of the men killed.

“The dog had belonged to another friend in the block who passed away recently from a cardiac arrest.”

Police said a 65-year-old man had been arrested and charged in connection with the deaths. A second man, 40, has been arrested and inquiries remain ongoing.

An officer was on guard outside the flat where the bodies were found yesterday.

Detective Chief Inspector Susan Balfour, of the Major Investigation Team, said: “Our thoughts are very much with the families and friends of both men at what is a very difficult time for them.

“We have a dedicated team of officers in the area working on this investigation. This is likely to continue in the coming days and I would like to thank the local community for their understanding.

“We understand that this is an upsetting incident for the local community and I would urge anyone with concerns to speak to one of our officers.”

The 65-year-old man is expected to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court tomorrow.
