Edinburgh cyclist films terrifying near miss with BMW as driver 'swears at him'

A cyclist in Edinburgh has captured a frightening near miss with a black BMW before the driver 'swears' at the rider.

The incident took place on Old Dalkeith Road while both road users were approaching the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. As the road narrows down to one lane the cyclist signals and moves into a large space.

The biker is then overtaken by a Fiat 500 just before arriving at an area which is restricted due to roadworks and leaves little space for cars to overtake cyclists.

As the cyclist enters the roadworks zone, the BMW driver comes up behind and overtakes - before 'sticking two fingers up' at the rider.

The cyclist shared the clip on TikTok which received comments from social media users.

One said: "The car drivers are completely in the wrong. Next time try and take the primary position so they can't do a dangerous overtake."

Another said: "Take control of the centre of the road in those situations - and thank the cars for patience when you move back to left."

While one added: "You need to cycle more defensively. Where there isn't space to allow a safe overtake, position yourself to block unsafe overtakes."

The Highway Code was updated last year clarifying that a safe passing distance should be at least 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists at speeds of up to 30mph, and drivers should give them more space when overtaking at higher speeds.

This update makes the guidance more specific as previously, motorists were advised to give “at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car”.
