Edinburgh crews race to local sweet shop after early morning blaze in basement

A large emergency response raced to an Edinburgh sweet shop on Saturday morning after a fire broke out in the basement.

Fire crews had sped to the scene on Dalry Road in the city centre shortly after 4am, when reports were made of the blaze at Levant Sweets.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue service told Edinburgh Live over six engines had been deployed to the blaze on, including seven water pumps.

Taking hold in the basement of the shop, crews had worked through the early hours of the morning to get the flames under control, with a crew still in attendance at 10am.

Firefighters were pictured outside the property not long after 4am, with part of the road blocked off to allow access for emergency crews.

There are no serious reported injuries from the fire, however one individual has been treated for smoke inhalation.

The traditional Levant sweet shop was set up just before the first lockdown by Syrian refugees, who had arrived in Edinburgh through the UN resettlement programme.

'Operations Control mobilised seven appliances and a command support unit to the scene where one casualty was treated for smoke inhalation.
