Edinburgh couple finally tie the knot after spending 60 years together

An Edinburgh couple have finally tied the knot after spending 60 years together.

Alex and Jane Hamilton first met in Birmingham in 1956 when they were both seeing other people.

The adorable pair couldn't stay apart and, six years later, decided to start a new life together in Alex's home city of Edinburgh reports the BBC.

They have been a couple ever since - and are parents to five grown-up children - but only recently decided to "make it official".

Mr and Mrs Hamilton tied the knot at their local parish church in Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, on Saturday.

Joining in the celebrations were their two daughters Sally and Kate, Alex's sons Gordon and Neil and Jane's daughter Beverley, as well as their 11 grandchildren.

The couple said they had "the perfect wedding" - complete with a piper - and are now looking forward to their official honeymoon next month.

Mrs Hamilton told BBC Radio Scotland's Drivetime programme : "I'm feeling very good. We had a fantastic weekend, a fantastic wedding. Everyone enjoyed themselves and it was just perfect.

"All our children and grandchildren came, with my eldest granddaughter as my maid of honour and Alex's son as his best man."

The couple had occasionally talked about getting married down the years, but their busy lives running their own butter and cheese company seemed to get in the way.

Mrs Hamilton said: "We never got engaged. But then, just a few weeks ago, Alex was sat on the end of the bed and he said, I think we should get married, and that was it.

"We have a brilliant relationship. We've had our ups and downs as most people do but there has never been any doubts in either of our minds."

For new husband Alex, the wedding was the celebration of "a wonderful 60 years".

Speaking to the BBC the delighted groom said: "When I first met Jane, I looked at her and thought, this is the woman I've been looking for all my life.

"We have once or twice talked about getting married, but we were so busy with work and it was very consuming.

"The wedding itself was unbelievable. We have a marvellous family who all seem to get on well together.

"The future is now about living as long as we can, make the most of what's left of our lives and live every day as it comes."

Jane also said she never had any doubt they would be together for the rest of their lives - with or without a wedding ring.

"When I first met Alex, I saw his cheeky smile and I was done for," she said.

"But he was married and I was about to get married six weeks later so we just thought this isn't going to happen.

"But in the end we just couldn't keep away from each other and in 1962 we finally got together."

The couple's first romantic break back in the 1960s was to Oban in Argyll and Bute - and that is where they will return for their honeymoon.

Mrs Hamilton said: "We are going back for three nights in June and that will be lovely. "
