Edinburgh Council election had over 2,000 ballots spoiled by voters

Over 2,000 ballot papers were rejected during the Edinburgh Council election last week.

Of the 188,601 ballots cast in Edinburgh, 2,383 (1.26 per cent) were rejected during the adjudication process.

This is down slightly from the 2017 council election when 2,530 of the 187,157 votes (1.35 per cent) were deemed invalid.

1,840 votes were discounted due to a '1' being written beside more than one candidate. Under the Single Transferable Vote, candidates need to be ranked 1,2,3 and so on for ballots to be considered valid.

This year, 335 ballots were rejected due to no clear first preference being indicated, whilst 1,840 voters indicated a first preference next to multiple candidates and 245 ballots were 'unmarked or void for uncertainty'.

Furthermore, three ballots were refused due to something being 'written or marked by which the voter can be identified except the printed number and other unique identifying mark on the back'.
