Edinburgh community centre discovers decades old writing on castle walls

A community centre in Edinburgh discovered decades old writing on its walls while redecorating.

Craigentinny Community Centre, which is housed in a 400 year old castle, was getting a bit of a makeover when staff found signatures from locals dating back to the 80s. Vikki Cavanagh, Chair of the Management Committee at the centre, said the response has been ‘lovely’.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, she said: “The community service team had offered to come in and redecorate the whole community centre for us.

“It's a 400 year old building. It's rich with history, but we didn't realise it would have some more recent history.”

Sitting at the top of the castle, the room the writing was discovered in has been used for various things over the years though mainly served as a youth group room. Vikki continued: “It's actually been lovely to see the response.

“I posted it yesterday and thought people might recognise a few named, but so many people who still live in the community have commented. One local man who came to the club for many years spotted his name, and his kids came to the club as well.

“Obviously they were allowed to write on the walls back in the day, and we’re keeping it there over the redecorating so it’ll stay under there for the next folks.

“There’s a few of the scribbles we’ve scrubbed out. A lot of the people were 15 or 16-years-old at the time, so it’s to be expected.”

The centre is still open while the renovations are underway, though many groups are taking a holiday at the moment. You can find out more about what’s happening at the centre here.
