AN Edinburgh comedian has launched a fundraiser to help him replace his teeth after an assault.
Earlier this month, while trying to protect a pregnant woman at a pub in the capital, Michael Porter was assaulted and lost his front teeth, with the attack leaving him "physically and emotionally shaken".
Porter said the estimated cost for dental treatment has come in at a whopping £3800.
Porter – who owns the Comedy Cellar in Edinburgh – is still performing despite his ordeal, but the incident has affected his ability to eat and dented his confidence, while he is also struggling with a speech impediment.
He has now launched an appeal to try and raise the £3800 for his treatment.
Porter said on the GoFundMe page: "While stepping in to protect a pregnant woman from an escalating situation, I was assaulted.
"As a result of the attack, I lost my front teeth and have been left physically and emotionally shaken.
"I perform at my comedy club seven days a week and my smile is my business.
"I never imagined I’d be in a position where I’d have to ask for help, but the costs for dental treatment to repair my teeth are overwhelming. I got bridge work done in Northern Ireland under the NHS but now living in Scotland I'm told this isn't covered here."
Porter has offered free tickets to any of his shows to anyone who is able to make a donation.
He goes on: "The damage has not only affected my ability to eat but my confidence and I have a speech impediment now which is difficult being a comedian.
"I’m reaching out to the community to ask for any support you can offer in helping me cover the expenses of dental surgery and recovery. Any contribution, big or small, would make an immense difference in my life and help me move forward from this event."
